An Intimate Wedding in the Azores: The Story Behind Tanis & Danny's Portugal Destination Wedding

For years, Tanis, founder of TEWS, has spent her career immersed in weddings.

She has watched brides step into gowns for the first time, calmed nerves moments before ceremonies, adjusted veils with steady hands, and helped create meaningful celebrations for countless couples. Weddings have always been part of her world, not simply as events, but as deeply emotional experiences centered around family, connection, and storytelling.

On July 29th, 2025, Tanis and her husband Danny created a wedding story of their own.

The couple chose to celebrate their marriage in the Azores, Portugal, the homeland where Danny’s parents were born and raised. 

For Danny’s father especially, the trip carried immense emotion. It had been more than forty years since he had returned home to the island. Bringing their wedding to the Azores became a way to honour not only their love story, but also the generations, traditions, and family history that came before them.

And as if the day itself could not hold more meaning, July 29th also happened to be Tanis’s parents’ wedding anniversary.

The shared date became a beautiful and symbolic reminder of two families being woven together across generations, honouring enduring love, family legacy, and the marriages that helped shape their own story.

“It felt incredibly special knowing we were getting married on the same day my parents began their marriage,” Tanis shares. “It made the entire day feel even more connected and meaningful for both of our families.”

With only 26 guests present, the wedding was intentionally intimate. Every single person invited held significance in the couple’s lives.

“I spend so much of my life helping create meaningful experiences for others that when it came to our own wedding, I realized intimacy mattered most to me,” Tanis says. “We wanted every person there to feel deeply connected to the experience.”

That intimacy was present in every detail throughout the celebration.

Before the ceremony began, Tanis and Danny hand wrote personal letters to each guest attending the wedding , heartfelt notes sharing what each person meant to them and why it mattered that they were there beside them. The letters became one of the most emotional elements of the day, setting the tone for a celebration rooted entirely in gratitude, family, and love.

Their ceremony took place at Estufa Fria do Jardim Botânico José do Canto, surrounded by tropical gardens, lush greenery, and the soft Atlantic breeze drifting through the island. The setting felt peaceful, romantic, and deeply connected to the natural beauty of the Azores.

Helping bring the entire vision to life was wedding planner Maria, owner of Ambiance Weddings, who quickly became far more than simply a planner throughout the process.

Planning a wedding overseas can feel overwhelming, but Maria’s warmth, attentiveness, and care transformed the experience into something seamless and deeply personal. Her love for the island and genuine dedication to the couple made her feel like family long before the wedding day arrived.

“Maria was truly one of the most special parts of this entire experience,” Tanis shares. “She cared about every detail as much as we did and made sure not only Danny and I, but our entire family, felt supported and taken care of throughout the entire process. By the end, she honestly felt like family to us.”

Together, they created a ceremony that beautifully reflected both cultures and generations. Every word spoken during the ceremony was personally written by Tanis and Danny, intentionally honouring family, memory, legacy, and love, including Danny’s mother and brother who are no longer with them but whose presence was deeply felt throughout the day.

One of the most emotional moments came as Tanis walked down the aisle.

Her parents proudly walked her halfway before her 8-year-old child stepped in to take over, walking her the remainder of the way toward Danny. The moment felt incredibly tender and symbolic, a reflection not only of their relationship, but of the family they had already built together.

As they stood exchanging the vows they had written themselves, two white butterflies flew overhead.

“It felt impossible not to notice,” Tanis recalls. “Everything became still for a moment. It felt incredibly special, almost like we were being watched over.”

For her bridal looks, Tanis wore two gowns throughout the celebration, each intentionally chosen and customized to reflect the softness and effortless romance of the island setting.

For the ceremony, she wore Vivienne by Varca, a breathtaking hand embroidered gown whose airy silk and intricate detailing beautifully complemented the colours and atmosphere of the Azores. The movement of the fabric in the Atlantic breeze created an ethereal softness as she walked through the gardens toward Danny.

Later in the evening, Tanis changed into a strapless Aleena Leena gown that the TEWS team redesigned specifically for her. Layers were removed to create a softer, lighter silhouette that visually tied into the delicacy and movement of her ceremony gown, while a silk scarf was added to complete the look with understated elegance.

Every accessory she wore carried meaning as well.

Her earrings were handcrafted in the Azores using traditional Portuguese gold filigree, an art form Portugal is widely known and celebrated for. Around her wrist, she wore a bracelet engraved with the names of the couple’s three children, keeping them symbolically close throughout every moment of the celebration.

Her veil, custom made by TEWS, became yet another deeply personal detail woven into the wedding day.

Danny wore linen, embracing the relaxed elegance of the island while the ocean air naturally softened the warmth of the summer evening.

And although Tanis is usually the one managing details behind the scenes at weddings, several members of the TEWS team travelled to Portugal alongside her so she could fully experience being present as a bride herself.

The women who had spent years helping other brides feel cared for stepped into that role for Tanis, handling concierge details, supporting the family, and ensuring she could simply enjoy the day without needing to manage it herself.

“It meant so much to have them there,” she says. “They allowed me to actually feel cared for and fully present in moments I normally would have been working through.”

The evening itself became a heartfelt celebration of Portuguese culture and family traditions. Guests enjoyed authentic Portuguese cuisine and traditional desserts throughout the evening, including the couple’s decision to replace a traditional wedding cake with beloved Portuguese custard pastries.

Traditional Portuguese folk dancers brought the spirit and energy of the island to life during the reception, creating unforgettable moments filled with music, movement, and joy.

Even the smallest details reflected the couple’s story and the life they’ve built together, including custom cufflinks featuring their beloved dog, ensuring a small piece of home remained close throughout the celebration.

Looking back, the wedding was far more than simply a beautiful event.

It was a homecoming.
A tribute to family.
A celebration of culture, legacy, and love.

It was children, parents, grandparents, and friends gathered together on an island filled with meaning.
It was handwritten letters and heartfelt vows.
It was honouring those no longer present while deeply cherishing those who were.

Most of all, it was a reminder that the most meaningful weddings are not always the grandest ones,  they are the ones where every detail tells a story, every person matters, and every moment feels deeply connected to the people and places that shaped you.

And in the Azores, surrounded by ocean air, family history, and the people they loved most, Tanis and Danny created exactly that.
